Could there be a more boring, uninspired name for a fat burner supplement?
And yet, it does exactly what the name says–delivering better fat-burning activity than products with much more sizzling, crazy & eye-catching names.

About Green Tea Fat Burner
Made by the green tea supplement innovator Applied Nutrition, Green Tea Fat Burner is mostly a standardized green tea extract + caffeine formula. They throw in some extras too, but they don’t do much. Some claims and features for Green Tea Fat Burner include:
- Metabolic enhancement. They say it “increases calorie burning,” and that it may deliver rapid results thanks to the fast-acting liquid softgels.
- Antioxidant support. A blend of superfruit extracts is included to protect cells against the damaging effects of free radicals.
- Vitality boosters. It’s got some adaptogen herbs and other botanicals which are also claimed to help with weight loss and overall wellness.

Green Tea Fat Burner is a good supplement bet if you want… well… if you want a green tea fat burner.
Applied Nutrition is one of the first companies to formulate a green tea fat burner, and they haven’t looked back since.
When Green Tea Fat Burner first came out, it was a big deal. Today, it’s no longer a novel formula… but it does the job done.
Let’s take a closer look at the ingredients in this “foundation” weight loss formula.
Green Tea Extract 400 mg (50% EGCG)
Also called Epigallocatechin-3-gallate, EGCG is an active “fat burning” antioxidant compound that is responsible for green tea’s weight loss benefits (tea’s caffeine is another active thermogenic compound).
It’s good they standardize to 50% EGCG. Standardization ensures you get this active fat-burning ingredient, and the 50% is about average for green tea supplements standardized to EGCG. Solid.
If you take Green Tea Fat Burner as directed, you’ll get 400 mg EGCG every day. This is strong potency; in fact, it is almost double the EGCG dosage of one small study that found green tea antioxidants seem to help with weight loss.
So as promised, with this formula, you seem to get a good pop of our #1-ranked fat-burner ingredient: Green Tea Extract. which also happens to be found in 4 out of our best 5 fat-burner supplements.
Caffeine 160 mg
Yeahhhhh, we know we rip on caffeine as a “false nootropic” in brain supplements, but it sure is right at home in fat burners… especially this one.
Caffeine is a true fat burner. But there’s more. Researchers say caffeine works in concert with the catechin antioxidants in green tea (including EGCG)–which may unleash synergy that amplifies caffeine’s fat-burning ability. The caffeine+catechin synergy is why green tea is one of the most popular fat burners of all time.
Green Tea Fat Burner’s hefty 160 mg caffeine dose seems to take full advantage of this legendary thermogenic combo.
Antioxidant Boost 100 mg
Burning fat like a human inferno is awesome, but it has a drawback:
-
Fat-burning creates “exhaust” in the form of free radicals.
These free radicals can damage cells, which may accelerate the aging process and create health concerns. Antioxidants help neutralize free radicals, so they are great ingredients to include in fat-burner formulas.
Green Tea Fat Burner’s Antioxidant boost is a 100 mg blend of antioxidant-rich fruits and berries: Bilberry, Blueberry, European Elder powder* & Pomegranate.
The only enhanced form is blueberry, as a 4:1 concentrate. There is no standardization of these botanicals, and 100 mg of fruit antioxidants isn’t much to get excited about. Antioxidant Boost is really just a little extra protection against the free radicals that will be generated by this fat-burning formula.
*Note: “European Elder powder” is not, in fact, the ashes of dead Germans, Spaniards and Frenchmen. No, they mean elderberries… but for some reason use the old-school term, “European Elder.”
Vitality Boost 86 mg
This is our one big gripe with Green Tea Fat Burner’s formula. The Vitality Boost is a small 86 mg dose of herbals Eleuthero, Holy Basil, Maté, Schisandra and Ginseng.
While all of these ingredients could be helpful for vitality as advertised, in Green Tea Fat Burner, they appear in tiny amounts. These dosages are way to small to deliver any benefits.
Green Tea Fat Burner is driven by a solid 50% EGCG green tea extract and a fat 160 mg caffeine dosage. The antioxidants are a nice touch, if a weak dosage… but the vitality complex is pretty much useless here.
Green Tea Fat Burner Benefits
“Concentrated green tea extract to maximize your results.” It’s nice to see that Applied Nutrition specifies that green tea “won’t ‘melt’ fat off your body.”
The rest of their claims are pretty modest, too. They put everything in the context of increasing calorie-burning, “kick-starting” fat burning ability, and supplying antioxidant protection.
Applied Nutrition’s clean-and-conservative claims are actually a sign of quality–especially in the fat burner category where so many products make crazy (and illegal) claims about dramatic weight loss.
Who Takes It?
Green Tea Fat Burner is incredibly popular. It’s got TV commercials and is widely available in leading drug store chains, Wal-Mart and other big-box stores, vitamin stores, Amazon, and online nutritional supplement outlets. It’s everywhere.
We think it’s probably taken by people who are taking a fat burner for the first time: They’ve already heard about Green Tea Fat Burner, so that’s what they try first.
There’s probably a lot of people who buy it on impulse as well. They’re familiar with the brand, are thinking about losing weight, and BAM… they see Green Tea Fat Burner while shopping in a drug store, so they grab it.
Any Side Effects?
If you’ve got sensitivities to caffeine or stimulants, proceed with caution. Each serving of Green Tea Fat Burner supplies 160 mg caffeine (about 2 cups of coffee) PLUS whatever additional caffeine is in the formula’s green tea extract. Jitters, anxiousness, irritability, etc… but generally, that’s the price you pay for caffeine-driven fat burners. Be aware that taking Green Tea Fat Burner before bedtime could cause sleep problems, too.
Summary
Green Tea Fat Burner Advantages
- Reliable, basic formula. It’s no longer a groundbreaking advancement, but Green Tea Fat Burner still supplies the tried-and-true EGCG+Caffeine fat burning stack.
- Potency. Taken as directed, the 400 mg EGCG and 320 mg caffeine will likely reach the potency you need to spark thermogenesis.
- Credibility. Applied Nutrition is the originator of THE green tea fat burner supplement; it’s an influential thermogenic formula with a large, loyal fan base.
- Liquid-filled soft gels. This cutting-edge nutrient delivery form is comfortable to swallow, easy to absorb and fast-acting… a good quality mark here.
Green Tea Fat Burner Drawbacks
- “Vitality Boost.” Roughly rounded off, this herbal blend is completely useless for vitality.
- “Antioxidant Boost.” It’s not a drawback per se, but their antioxidants are low-dose and not standardized… like they’re just there for show.
- Not vegan-friendly. The softgels contain gelatin, along with a range of inactive compounds. Just a heads-up, too: This product contains soy.
Does Green Tea Fat Burner Work?
Yes. It is true to its name: Green tea, standardized to the right active compound, enhanced with caffeine. That’s a recipe for fat burning. Again, nothing especially innovative or exotic about these ingredients; just basic thermogenics that offer solid support for healthy weight management.
Final Word on Green Tea Fat Burner
Green Tea Fat Burner is a great choice for a “first thermogenic.” It is reputable, reliable, and for the most part, well-formulated. There’s a certain risk and reward with fat burners… the more exotic formulas may have a lot more activity, but more side effects too. With Green Tea Fat Burner, you have a conservative option: Dependable thermogenics that work… with any side effects that might be experienced typically being of the “predictable and mild” variety.
