Push Your Performance. Push Your Recovery.
BSN is one of the premier bodybuilding supplement manufacturers. There’s no denying that.
Check out our BSN SYNTHA-6, and BSN CLEAN Fat Burner reviews if you don’t believe us.
Let’s see, now. Those two cover the protein and fat-burning categories. Can BSN get high marks in the post-workout department?
Enter BSN CELLMASS 2.0.
As you may have guessed, it’s an advanced formulation of BSN CELLMASS, which the manufacturer launched in 2010.
BSN CELLMASS’ main ingredients were creatine ethyl ester malate and glutamine AKG. Creatine and glutamine are staples in post-workout products, and rightfully so – they have produced awesome results over the years.
BSN CELLMASS earned the respect of many consumers because it helped boost their recovery and increased their strength with little to no side effects.
They also liked its solubility, although they were torn on its taste – some liked it, some didn’t.
The big question now looms: can BSN CELLMASS 2.0 exceed expectations?
The manufacturer dubs BSN CELLMASS 2.0 “a concentrated post-workout formula designed to ensure you get the most out of your efforts,” per its official website.
It objective is to prepare you for your next workouts. In fact, the company envisions you “powering through” your next session.
Well, we like it. That’s what an efficient post-workout formula is all about – helping you recover fast and conquer your subsequent training sessions.
BSN did a 180-degree turnaround and went with creatine monohydrate instead of creatine ethyl ester.
Okay, some may be scratching their heads why the manufacturer decided to make the switch. After all, creatine ethyl ester has better solubility than creatine monohydrate.
Plus, creatine ethyl ester doesn’t give you that bloated look creatine monohydrate sometimes does.
However, it’s easy to see BSN heard its consumers’ clamors for a better-tasting post-workout product. Like we said, many customers didn’t like the taste of the original BSN CELLMASS.
In addition, creatine ethyl ester is more expensive than creatine monohydrate.
There you have it: customers wanted a cheaper and more delicious post-workout supplement. BSN CELLMASS 2.0 hopes to pick up where the older version left off.
Now, we’re not downplaying the efficiency of creatine monohydrate. Despite its flaws (poor solubility, some bloating, etc.), it’s still the most effective and cheapest form of creatine on the market.
BSN CELLMASS 2.0’s six grams of creatine monohydrate sounds impressive at first, but you have to realize it takes two daily servings to reach that amount.
That means BSN CELLMASS 2.0 has three grams of creatine monohydrate per serving, which is still decent (KAGED MUSCLE RE-KAGED, a highly-touted post-workout supplement from Kris Gethin, has only 1.5 grams of creatine per serving).
With that, we’ve figured out how much creatine this product has per serving considering the ingredient is part of a – ugh – proprietary blend.
Nonetheless, BSN CELLMASS 2.0’s creatine content should help you increase muscle mass and improve athletic performance in conjunction with training, good nutrition, and enough rest.
This product also has 15 grams of hydrolyzed whey protein isolate per two daily servings, per BSN’s official website.
Somehow, we can’t reconcile this with the two grams of protein per serving indicated on the ingredients.
We feel there’s a discrepancy somewhere. It’s hard to grade a product which has misleading information. BSN CELLMASS 2.0 confounds us, to say the least.
The third key ingredient of BSN CELLMASS 2.0 is three grams of glutamine per two daily servings.
This much glutamine – the most abundant amino acid – will help preserve hard-earned muscle mass.
You also get some extra health benefits from glutamine: it helps boost your immune system, improve digestive health, and increase human growth hormone (HGH) levels.
We like the fact it’s in BSN CELLMASS 2.0.
Let’s check out the formula ingredients:
- Calories, 10: BSN CELLMASS is a low-calorie post-workout supplement with a measly 10 calories per serving – one of the lowest in the industry. It has the same amount of calories as Dr. Layne Norton’s Carbon Recover, although the latter has a bigger serving size (14.9 grams per scoop).
- Total Carbohydrate, 1 g: This product has a low carb content (less than one percent of the daily value). Most of it is from its acesulfame potassium content, one of the most common sweeteners in the bodybuilding supplement industry.
- Protein, 2 g: We’re still perplexed. The manufacturer says BSN CELLMASS 2.0 has “15 g of hydrolysed whey protein isolate” per two servings (which comes out as 7.5 grams of protein per serving). However, the ingredients say there are only two grams of protein per serving. We scoured the Internet, hoping this was a misprint. Unfortunately, it wasn’t. Even though you can benefit from hydrolyzed whey protein isolate, there’s no use in feeding your muscles if you’re not sure how much protein they’re getting. Doesn’t make much sense to us.
- Calcium, 20 mg: Of course, BSN CELLMASS 2.0’s calcium content comes from its questionable hydrolyzed whey protein component. It’s not a significant source at just two percent of the daily value. If you want more calcium, include some milk in your post-workout BSN CELLMASS 2.0 shake.
CELLMASS 2.0 PROPRIETARY BLEND, 8.3 g
Recovery Composite
Whey Protein Hydrolysate: This is whey protein broken down into smaller peptides for faster absorption. It has at least 90 percent protein with little to no carb and fat content. The downside: it has the highest price among whey protein products due to the additional processing.
L-Glutamine: The most abundant amino acid is also one of the most versatile: it helps preserve muscle mass, increase HGH levels, and improve digestive health, among others. It’s a staple in many post-workout supplements.
Glutamine peptides: a form of glutamine fused with other amino acids for better assimilation. Some fitness experts believe this ingredient can help prevent muscle breakdown and increase muscle growth.
Myogenic Matrix
Creatine monohydrate: The most common and effective form of creatine. This ingredient – one of the safest and most studied – helps build muscle mass and improve athletic performance.
Creatine HCL (CON-CRET): CON-CRET is a brand of creatine hydrochloride which bodybuilding supplement manufacturer PROMERA SPORTS created. According to the company’s official website, when one supplements with CON-CRET, he or she “can now dose based on their body weight and workout intensity.” Furthermore, no loading phase is necessary. It’s also soluble. Quite frankly, we don’t see the need to include creatine HCl in BSN CELLMASS 2.0 if it already has creatine monhydrate, the time-tested form. The former is redundant.
Creatine anhydrous: To simplify matters, this is creatine monohydrate without the water. Our take: just like creatine HCl, creatine anhydrous is another redundant ingredient. Creatine monohydrate is king.
Insulino Interfusion
Taurine: Another post-workout staple. In fact, its benefits are vastly similar as creatine’s. Taurine helps build muscle mass and improve athletic performance, too. One advantage taurine has over creatine is it doesn’t produce the bloated look creatine sometimes does.
Banaba extract (leaf) (18 percent corosolic acid): An ingredient which has gained traction among post-workout supplements, banaba leaf extract helps create a post-workout insulin spike. This, in turn, helps your muscles become more receptive to key nutrients such as amino acids and creatine for more growth and faster recovery.
Formula Analysis
So far, BSN CELLMASS 2.0 has left us baffled and confused.
The most baffling part is the protein content – the ingredient label says it has two grams of protein per serving.
On the other hand, the manufacturer’s official website says BSN CELLMASS 2.0 has 15 grams of hydrolyzed whey protein isolate per day (two servings of 7.5 grams each).
Which is which?
This kind of misinformation leaves customers confused. When they are, they don’t purchase a product. BSN CELLMASS 2.0 was supposed to be a better version of its predecessor, but it made a questionable first impression.
Sure, it can help you build muscle mass with its six grams of creatine monohydrate per two servings.
It can also help you preserve it with three grams of glutamine with the same number of scoops.
It doesn’t matter. BSN CELLMASS 2.0 is a flawed product.
Try its CELLMASS 2.0 PROPRIETARY BLEND for starters. Nobody should like proprietary blends – they disguise the precise ingredient amounts for the sake of fancier marketing.
We also feel BSN should have used creatine monohydrate exclusively instead of adding creatine hydrochloride (CON-CRET) and creatine anhydrous. Creatine monohydrate is the traditional and most effective form of creatine.
Oh, and did we already mentioned its the cheapest of its kind?
The final straw is the inclusion of FD&C Red No. 40, an artificial food coloring. It’s also a human carcinogen, per the Department of Health and Human Services.
BSN CELLMASS 2.0 Benefits
BSN CELLMASS 2.0 helps you build muscle and achieve your bodybuilding goals, which includes transforming one’s self, eliminating weaknesses, and increasing determination, per its official website.
Who Takes It?
BSN CELLMASS 2.0 is meant for healthy and active individuals who are at least 18 years old who want to increase muscle mass, boost recovery, increase strength, and achieve their overall fitness goals.
Any Side Effects?
BSN CELLMASS 2.0 has no glaring side effects. However, individuals who are allergic to milk, wheat, and soy should steer clear of this product.
The manufacturer also issues a warning:

Final Word on BSN CELLMASS 2.0
BSN set to create version of the flawed BSN CELLMASS.
Instead, it manufactured another flawed post-workout product in BSN CELLMASS 2.0 – baffling protein content, a proprietary blend, and a human carcinogen aren’t good at all.
BSN CELLMASS can help you recover, but not as fast as, say, KAGED MUSCLE RE-KAGED. Sadly, it fails to meet expectations.
Skip this one, folks. Get a post-workout with cleaner ingredients such as MyProtein Hurricane XS.
